Current Information:
Point 110 Military Cemetery, Fricourt, France
18th Division, including the 11th Royal Fusiliers battalion of 54 Brigade, arrived in France at end of July, 1915 and after a period of training moved to the Somme area, recently taken over from the French Army. Between 2nd and 10th November, 1915, 11th Royal Fusiliers were in the front line in D1 sector, near Bois Francais, south of Fricourt. The Battalion diary reports this tour as being ‘very quiet’ with just the occasional shelling and a few aerial torpedoes to contend with. It may well have been ‘quiet’ by Western Front standards but not quiet enough for Francis Violin who was killed on 8th November. |
